How to Switch Eyewear Virtual Try-On Providers

AUGLIO · MIGRATION GUIDE · SEPTEMBER 2026 · EYEWEAR E-COMMERCE

In short: switching virtual try-on providers comes down to which frames are ready at launch. Some existing 3D models can be reused, some catalogue frames already have a match in the new library, and the rest need new assets. Auglio assesses all three routes before cutover, so try-on can continue through the handover when catalogue coverage and licence dates allow.

Changing virtual try-on providers raises a practical question before anything changes on your website: which frames will be ready for customers to try on when the new service goes live?

The answer depends on your catalogue. Some existing 3D models can be reused. Other frames may already have a match in the new provider's library. Products that fall into neither group need new digital assets. Working out those routes before the switchover is what makes the project manageable.

If you are considering a move to Auglio, here is what happens to your models, product data and live try-on experience.

Can you reuse your existing 3D frame models?

Yes, if you can supply the completed 3D model files, have the right to use them with another provider, and Auglio confirms that the files are compatible with its production workflow.

Access to a virtual try-on service does not necessarily mean you possess its underlying 3D models. Your current provider or an asset library may own them. Before planning a transfer, ask what files you can obtain and what your agreement permits you to do with them. The retailer is responsible for checking those rights.

You can also license models independently from a hosted library, provided the files can be transferred and Auglio confirms they are usable. Auglio can assess the assets you have; it cannot assume that a working model in another system will automatically be available to move.

It is worth asking about ownership in both directions. New digital models produced by Auglio remain Auglio property, so make sure the usage terms are clear as part of your assessment.

What if you cannot transfer your old models?

Start with a catalogue match. Give Auglio your product list, including UPC or EAN numbers for multi-brand frames. Auglio checks that list against its existing model library and returns the products it can match.

This gives you a practical starting point: you can see which products have an available route to try-on and which need new asset production. Product IDs are then mapped to the relevant digital assets. The final mapping should be checked against the retailer's live product pages before launch.

Do not estimate the work from the total number of products alone. A large catalogue with many confirmed matches can be a different project from a smaller own-brand collection that needs new models.

How are unmatched frames digitised?

Auglio can create new assets from product photographs. Physical frames do not normally need to be shipped.

The production route depends on the presentation the retailer needs. Auglio offers Semi 3D, AI-assisted 3D and fully handmade 3D models. These options differ in production work, visual detail and cost. For some own-brand retailers, that choice can make the overall project more cost-effective than using a single production approach across the entire catalogue.

For Semi 3D and AI 3D, the standard starting point is a front photograph and a side photograph. Full 3D requires additional views, and complex curved frames may need images that show their shape from above. Auglio's eyewear photo guide sets out the current requirements. The right approach for an unmatched collection is agreed during the assessment.

Can you change providers without interrupting try-on?

A switchover can be planned without a gap in try-on availability, but it depends on the coverage ready for launch and the dates of your existing licence.

The old and new systems can overlap while the replacement is checked. It is generally better to give shoppers one clear try-on option for each product than to display competing tools together. A staged launch is also possible: Auglio can begin with ready products while the remaining models are prepared.

Before launch, Auglio and the retailer test the product-to-model mapping, the website experience and the other agreed requirements. The customer confirms the result before the new experience goes live.

A return to the old provider is a separate commercial question. If that licence has ended, the retailer would need to arrange renewed access with the previous provider. That is why the cutover date should be considered alongside model readiness, not set in isolation.

What happens to historical data?

Do not assume that saved try-ons, images or past analytics will transfer between providers. The retailer should request and retain any data it needs from its existing provider before that agreement ends.

Auglio can handle much of the new setup as a turnkey project, but the retailer still needs to supply its product list, resolve rights to any external assets, arrange access to historical data, and approve the finished experience.

How long does a migration take, and what does it cost?

There is no reliable single answer for every retailer. The work depends on how many products match existing models, whether old assets can be reused, how many new models are needed, which production option is chosen, and what the website integration requires.

Auglio assesses the catalogue and proposes the work and commercial terms for that project. Licence fees typically depend on website traffic; model production and other requirements are considered case by case. If you are still comparing tools, our guide to the best virtual try-on for eyewear in 2026 sets out what to look for. The useful question is not simply “How fast can we replace the tool?” It is “What will be ready for our customers when we do?”

If you are considering a move, book an Auglio migration assessment. Bring your product list with UPC or EAN numbers, any 3D files you have the right to use, and the end date of your current VTO agreement. Auglio can then identify the available models, the work needed for the rest, and a sensible path to launch.
